Some Facts About Venous Lakes
- Venous lakes usually occur in patients older than 50 years and the average age is 65.
- Venous lakes are most common on the lower lip
- These lesions are usually dark blue to purple, soft, smooth, and have well defined edges.
- They are not usually painful. They can be irritating, unsightly, and bleed on occasion.
- Color usually disappears on compression and reappears as the channel refills with blood
- The causes of venous lakes are unknown, but they are thought to be associated with sun
Venous Lake Treatment
We use a laser to treat these lesions. It is painless with a little local anesthetic and only takes a short visit. The lesion is gone immediately and all that remains is a small pin hole that heals over in a few days.

$450 – $650 per lesion depending on size.
Complications associated with venous lake removal
- Some minor swelling of the lip that usually only lasts a short time
- Possible small lump of fibrous tissue inside the lip that usually goes away over time. This is only noticeable if you squeeze the area. It isn’t visibly noticeable.
- Large lesions may require 2 treatments
- There is a possibility of them returning after treatment but that is uncommon.
